The Miaoli County Police Bureau and Education Department have joined forces to create an anti-fraud teacher team, aiming to protect schools from scams.
Reviewing fraud cases from January to June 2023, the Miaoli Police found 364 false investment cases, 252 installment payment fraud cases, 167 fake online shopping cases, and 113 investment fraud cases. False investment caused the highest losses, reaching 520,548,540 Taiwanese dollars. Online scams were most common, with 1,175 cases, up 227 cases from last year.
A retired teacher's story exemplifies teachers' vulnerability to fraud. To counter this, the analysis showed false investment targeting teachers at 29%, followed by phishing texts at 24%, and installment fraud at 16%. Consequently, a workshop titled "Prevention of Online Fraud and Campus Safety Reporting" was organized for 200 teachers from Miaoli County. The workshop encompassed an overview of fraud, techniques, teacher targeting, student manipulation, and prevention strategies.
This initiative empowers teachers to educate against telecom and online fraud, cultivating an anti-fraud culture on campuses. Police Chief Juang, Sheng-Shyong advised caution in investments, distrust of online acquaintances, and quick reporting of suspicious messages at 165.
