On December 11, at approximately 3:00 PM, the Miaoli Police Station in Gongguan received a report from personnel at Taiwan Power Company regarding an anomaly in the power monitoring system near Tower 2 of the river levee in the Gongguan Shiqiang area. Upon arrival, the police discovered a coil of white iron tubing suspected to have been cut by a thief, prompting an immediate dispatch of officers for further investigation.
Collaborating with Taiwan Power personnel, Miaoli Police found a black backpack and a set of tools near the tower. They suspected that the perpetrator had climbed down the well inside the tower to steal electrical cables. After shouting into the well, they received a response, indicating that the suspect had fallen and become trapped in the well during the attempted theft. The fire department was notified for assistance, and rescue personnel successfully retrieved the suspect, a 56-year-old male surnamed Lai, from the well. Subsequently, he was placed under police custody and taken for medical treatment. The case will be transferred to the Miaoli District Prosecutors Office for investigation on charges of theft, pending an assessment of Lai's physical condition during the interrogation.
The Miaoli Police remind potential criminals not to jeopardize their lives by engaging in illegal activities. Cutting electrical cables poses a high risk of electrocution and can significantly impact the quality of life for the public. The police urge the public to immediately call 110 to report any suspicious individuals or vehicles in remote areas involved in stealing public facilities. This proactive measure contributes to preventing incidents of theft that affect public welfare."
