Miaoli County, with its vast territory, has often seen unscrupulous operators illegally dumping waste in remote areas where human presence is scarce, making subsequent investigations quite challenging. In response to this, the Miaoli County Police Bureau began planning the installation of an AI automatic detection and reporting system in key dumping locations in June of last year. The system construction was just completed recently, and on the 9th of this month, it successfully identified and apprehended an illegal waste dumper in a remote area of Houlong Town.
The Miaoli County Police Bureau pointed out that in the past, most cases of illegal waste dumping were reported to the police by the public after discovery, requiring extensive review of surrounding surveillance cameras. Due to the difficulty in determining the exact dumping time, investigations often took a long time. In light of this, the bureau conducted big data analysis of hotspots for waste dumping over the past two years and installed AI technology equipment on important roads within the county. This equipment automatically analyzes passing vehicles, immediately reporting suspicious vehicles transporting waste to the respective police stations for prompt investigation, increasing the chances of catching offenders in the act.
In this case, a waste dumper surnamed Zhang was driving a white truck and illegally dumping waste around 1:50 PM on the 9th. Thanks to the AI detection system, the system promptly recognized and reported the incident, notifying local police to intercept. The police, using vehicle recognition systems, quickly identified the vehicle's whereabouts and the operator's identity, apprehending the dumper within 2 hours of the incident. The case is being prosecuted under Articles 27 and 50 of the Waste Disposal Act.
Miaoli County Police Bureau Chief emphasized that County Magistrate Zhong attaches great importance to environmental protection. He has instructed the Environmental Protection Bureau and the Police Bureau to strengthen efforts to prevent and combat illegal waste dumping. The Miaoli County Police Bureau not only requires each police station and field unit to enhance inspections of suspicious waste transport vehicles but also continues to integrate AI technology and various investigative methods to actively curb the trend of illegal waste dumping. They urge wrongdoers not to harbor any illusions and to contribute to maintaining the beauty of the environment in Miaoli."
