Miaoli County to Install 3 New Speed Cameras, Maximum Fine Set at NT$36,000
Unit: 外事科
The Miaoli County Police Bureau has announced the installation of three new speed cameras in specific locations, effective from March 1, 2024. The newly designated areas for speed enforcement are No. 1557 Gongyi Road in Zhunan Town, kilometer 101.2 on Provincial Highway 3 in Sanwan Township, and kilometer 19.9 on Road 140 in Sanyi Township. Additionally, the enforcement area for the existing average speed enforcement on County Road 140 has been adjusted to cover kilometer 16.2 to 16.9.
The decision to install speed cameras in these locations is based on various considerations. For instance, the Gongyi Road section in Zhunan Town, with its straight path and heavy traffic, poses a high risk of vehicles violating speed limits. Similarly, the winding roads of Provincial Highway 3 in Sanwan Township, often frequented by tourists enjoying scenic views, could result in accidents if vehicles travel at excessive speeds. Adjustments to the enforcement segments on County Road 140 were made after on-site inspections, taking into account factors such as ecological conservation, local residents' traffic safety, and commuting.
In accordance with the amendment to traffic regulations from the previous year, the penalty for severe speeding has been reduced from exceeding 60 km/h to exceeding 40 km/h. Simultaneously, the maximum fine has been increased from NT$24,000 to NT$36,000. The authorities hope that these measures will encourage drivers to adhere to speed limits, promoting road safety.
Chief Chen Shih-huang of the Miaoli County Police Bureau emphasized that the installation of speed cameras in accident-prone areas is intended to promote compliance with speed limits. The ultimate goal of law enforcement is not only to impose fines but to safeguard the safety of road users. Chief Chen urged road users to cultivate good habits of obeying traffic rules, contributing to collective efforts to maintain traffic safety and ensure smooth flow on the roads.
