Targeting ATM Withdrawal Hotspots: Zhunan Police Crack Down on Fraud Gangs
Unit: 外事科
The Zhunan Branch of the Miaoli County Police Department analyzed the withdrawal hotspots of fraudsters in February and discovered that fraudsters have been frequently withdrawing fraudulent money within the jurisdiction recently. Focusing on the distinctive characteristics of the money mule, they requested the Miaoli District Prosecutor's Office to supervise the investigation. Following the lead, they successfully dismantled a fraud syndicate.
When police officers from Zhunan's Zhonggang Haikou Police Station intensified patrols near the ATM withdrawal hotspots, they keenly spotted a money mule in the area, matching the characteristics of those who had withdrawn funds in the jurisdiction recently. They immediately reported to Prosecutor Zeng Ting-wei of the Miaoli District Prosecutor's Office, who then commanded an ambush and surveillance operation. During the ambush, they observed a suspect meeting with individuals near an idling minivan parked on the side of an industrial road, suspected to be preparing to hand over the withdrawn funds. Supportive forces were immediately notified, leading to the arrest of the suspect and four other accomplices on the spot. The police confiscated over 1.1 million NT dollars in cash, 10 bank cards, 4 mobile phones, ketamine, drug-laced coffee packets, and other pieces of evidence. The entire case is being investigated for offenses including fraud, organized crime prevention, and money laundering under relevant laws, with all four suspects remanded in custody by the court.
The Zhunan Precinct stated that according to statistics from the Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of the Interior, fraud cases still constitute the highest proportion of criminal cases. In addition to raising awareness, the police have also allocated specialized forces for analysis, disrupting financial flows, and ambushing and arresting accomplices of criminal syndicates. The Miaoli County Police Bureau will continue to collaborate with the Miaoli District Prosecutor's Office to crack down on fraud crimes, maintaining public property security.
